Men’s and women’s swimming/diving teams place fifth and sixth at 2013 MIAA Championships
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have placed fifth and sixth at the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships.
JENISON, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have placed fifth and sixth at the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Men
The Comets recorded 367 total points over the four days of competition. Kalamazoo College successfully defended its team championship with 895.5 points, followed by Calvin (666), Hope (527.5) and Albion (464.5). Alma was sixth with 246.5 points.
Three swimmers scored points in the 200 butterfly. Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/San Vicente de Paul) was the highest finisher, as he placed seventh with a time of 1:58.31. Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and Tyler Russell (Bay City/Central) were 10th (2:02.12) and 13th (2:07.11), respectively.
In the 1,650 freestyle, Korey Mervenne (Jenison) finished in eighth-place with a time of 16:47.47, while freshman Townsend Montgomery (Fort Gratiot/De La Salle) scored his first points at the championships with a 13th-place finish at 17:48.29.
In the 200 backstroke, Eric Dawdy (Holt) placed fourth with a time of 1:56.96. During the preliminaries, he posted the third-fastest time, 1:56.60, in school history. Mervenne was 13th in 2:05.63.
In the 100 freestyle, Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) touched the wall in 46.90 seconds to win the consolation heat and finish in ninth-place. Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton) finished in 14th-place with a time of 48.98 seconds. In the 200 breaststroke, Taylor Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) won the "B" final for a ninth-place finish, touching the wall in 2:12.61. Adam Rhein (Leonard/Romeo) placed 15th in 2:16.13.
The 400 freestyle relay quartet of Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett), DeRupa, Dawdy and Aldrich placed sixth with a time of 3:12.10.
Women
Olivet totaled 232 points to finish 7.5 points ahead of seventh-place Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. Calvin College won its ninth straight championship with 802.5 points. Hope was second with 764.5 points, followed by Kalamazoo (569.5), Alma (406) and Albion (393).
The Comets had three swimmers score points in the 200 butterfly, led by Kira Gates' (Grosse Ile) fifth-place finish. She touched the wall in 2:14.98, which is the second-best time in school history. Kristin Long (Pemberville, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) was 12th in 2:22.25, while Katie Dobis (Munster, Ind.) was 16th in 2:30.41.
In the 100 freestyle, Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) placed eighth with a time of 55.43 seconds. In the 1,650 freestyle, Shana Bush (Alma) scored ninth-place points with a time of 18:48.30, while Chelsea Mullins (Macomb/L'Anse Creuse North) was 13th in 19:30.45.
In the 200 backstroke, freshman Sarah Crittenden (Metamora/Lapeer East) finished in 16th-place with a time of 2:33.64. During the preliminaries, Bush set a career-best time of 2:16.35. The 400 freestyle relay team of Megan Dossey (Trenton), Jana Blodgett (Sturgis), Gates and Johnson capped the night with a seventh-place finish, and touched the wall in 3:44.10.
