Men's basketball team defeats Albion, 78-66, in MIAA Tournament quarterfinals
Behind 22 points each from juniors Andre Evans (Muskegon/Muskegon Heights) and Michael McClary (Bellaire), the Olivet College men’s basketball team defeated Albion College, 78-66, tonight in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
Behind 22 points each from juniors Andre Evans (Muskegon/Muskegon Heights) and Michael McClary (Bellaire), the Olivet College men's basketball team defeated Albion College, 78-66, tonight in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Comets advance to play at Calvin College in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Friday night at 8:15 p.m.
In addition to his 22 points, McClary grabbed 14 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season. As a team, Olivet (14-12) pulled down a MIAA Tournament record 52 rebounds.
After the Britons (14-12) drained a three-pointer to start the game, the Comets scored four straight points to take a 4-3 lead. Olivet did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the half, and led by as many as 10 points, 25-15, with 3:53 left before the half. Albion answered with eight straight points to trim its deficit to two points, but the Comets scored four of the last five points in the half to take a 29-24 lead into locker rooms.
In the second half, the Britons closed to within two points on three occasions with the last time being 53-51 at the 6:50 mark. Two jumpers and back-to-back three-pointers by Evans pushed Olivet's lead back to double digits, 63-53, with just under four minutes left in the game. McClary then canned a free throw to complete a three-point play for the Comets' first 13-point lead of the game. Olivet made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:16 to seal the win.
McClary made 10-of-25 field goals and 2-of-4 free throws for his 22 points. Evans was 5-for-11 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from the behind the arc, and perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Junior Joe Post (Olivet) joined them in double figures with 10 points. Evans and Post each dished out six assists. Off the bench, senior Joel Kerns (North Judson, Ind./San Pierre) had a career-high 11 rebounds.
Albion's J.C. Cruse and Chris Hutton scored 24 points apiece. Three Britons each grabbed four rebounds.
