The men’s basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Kalamazoo College, 74-65, tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo.
The men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Kalamazoo College, 74-65, tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo.
Steve Johnson (Detroit/Murray Wright) and Ronnie Pearson (Holly) led the way for the Fighting Comets (8-12, 2-7 MIAA) with 12 points apiece. Jeff Cooper (Dowagiac) was a spark off the bench with a career-high 11 points. Jerame File (Jackson/Hanover-Hornton) chipped in with 10 points while Derek Kurtz (Jonesville/Hillsdale) and McKinsey Golfin (Flint/Central) had nine and eight points, respectively.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first 8:06 of the contest. Olivet used a quick a 12-2 run in a span of just over two minutes to take a 10-point lead, 26-16, at the 9:50 mark. The Comets went on to lead by 10 points on two more occasions during the half. Olivet also led 41-32 at halftime.
In the second half, the Hornets (6-13, 2-7 MIAA) battled back to take a 57-54 lead with 7:18 remaining in the game. The Comets scored 20 points and held Kalamazoo to just eight points in the final 7:18 for the win.
File along Greg Ravy (New Orleans, La./L.B. Landry) pulled down six rebounds each.
Ryan Konwinski led the way for the Hornets with a game-high 16 points while brother Kyle Konwinski grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Tony Wichmann was next with 14 points and Tim Herman had 11.
Olivet will next play Saturday, Feb. 5, when it hosts Alma in the first game of a men's/women's basketball doubleheader at the Upton Center in Olivet. The men's game will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the women's game against Alma at approximately 3 p.m.
