The Olivet College men’s basketball team dropped a 71-56 decision at Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Alma College this evening at the Cappaert Gymnasium in Alma.
The men's basketball team dropped a 71-56 decision at Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Alma College this evening at the Cappaert Gymnasium in Alma.
Senior McKinsey Golfin (Flint/Central), who was making his first collegiate start, nailed a three-pointer for the first basket of the game. The Scots (8-5, 3-0) quickly answered with a layup and three-pointer to take a 5-3 lead. Golfin nailed two free throws to tie the contest. Following that tie, Alma scored the next five points of the game and never looked back. The Scots' biggest lead was nine points, 30-21, at halftime.
In the second half, the Fighting Comets (6-8, 0-3 MIAA) cut the deficit down to four points, 38-34, with 14:19 left. Olivet would not get any closer for the remainder of the game with Alma's biggest lead being 15 points twice.
Junior Greg Ravy (New Orleans, La./L.B. Landry) scored 11 points to lead the Comets. Senior Ronnie Pearson (Holly) had nine points, followed by Golfin and junior Steve Johnson (Detroit/Murray Wright) with seven points apiece. Johnson pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Anthony Jones scored 23 points to lead Alma. Joining him in double figures were Mark Barnes and Carl Hill with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Barnes grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Comets return home to face Calvin College Saturday, Jan. 15. Tip-off from the Upton Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
