Men’s Basketball Team Falls to MIAA Co-Leader Hope College, 90-73
The Olivet College men's basketball team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-leader Hope College, 90-73, tonight at the Upton Center.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's basketball team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-leader Hope College, 90-73, tonight at the Upton Center.
After the Fighting Comets (11-13, 3-8 MIAA) took an early 6-4 lead, the Flying Dutchmen went on a 20-8 run to take a 24-14 lead. Olivet then battled back and cut the deficit to four points at the 6:54 mark when senior Terrance Stewart (Muskegon Heights High School) nailed a three-pointer. Hope then extended its lead to 13 points with 1:38 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, the Comets pulled to within eight points on three occasions with the last time being at 77-68 with 4:06 left.
Stewart scored 15 points to lead Olivet. Sophomore center Derek Cox (Niles High School) added a season-high 13 points and junior guard Matt Brawley (Niles High School) had 12 points. Senior forward Patrick Dermeyer (Chase/Reed City High School) grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Dan Overbeek scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Flying Dutchmen (19-4, 9-2). Andy Phillips and Kyle Kleersnyder also scored in double figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Olivet will end the 2002-03 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22 when it travels to play MIAA rival Albion College. Tip-off from Kresge Gymnasium is 3 p.m.
