Schellhammer Makes a Three-Pointer as Men’s Basketball Team Defeats St. Mary’s College, 86-83
Junior guard Travis Schellhammer (Grand Ledge High School) made a three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to help the Olivet College men's basketball team defeat non-conference foe St. Mary's College, 86-83, at the Upton Center. The Fighting Comets' overall record improves to 7-4 and the Eagles now have a 2-11 overall mark.
OLIVET, MI. -- Junior guard Travis Schellhammer (Grand Ledge High School) made a three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to help the Olivet College men's basketball team defeat non-conference foe St. Mary's College, 86-83, at the Upton Center. The Fighting Comets' overall record improves to 7-4 and the Eagles now have a 2-11 overall mark.
In the first half, Olivet built its lead to six points at 23-17 with 8:29 remaining before St. Mary's rallied back to tie the score at 23-23. After a 29-29 tie, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the first half at 39-31 with 1:50 left. The Fighting Comets then used a 11-4 run and trailed 43-42 at halftime.
St. Mary's controlled the first 10 minutes of the second half and led by nine points at 69-60. The Comets then battled back with 11-1 run and took the lead 71-70 with 7:31 remaining in the game when senior forward Terrance Stewart (Muskegon Heights High School) made a three-pointer. Both teams then traded baskets for the next four minutes before Schellhammer made two free throws to give Olivet a four-point lead at 80-76. Kyle Volker from St. Mary's tied the score with 31 seconds left setting the stage for Schellhammer's game-winning basket.
"I am very happy with this win," said sixth-year Head Coach Steve Hettinga. "We kept looking for the right five guys to have on the court. We had great sparks off the bench like Terrance Stewart, who played super hard. Will Lee also came off the bench and did a great job."
Senior forward Michael Dyson (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix High School) led the Comets with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Stewart had a season-high 19 points on seven-of-nine shooting, including five-of-seven from three-point range. Sophomore Will Lee (Lansing Everett High School) and freshman guard De'Andre Pruitt (River Rouge High School) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Lee also had seven assists.
Marvin Tookes paced the Eagles with 19 points and Sam Lamb added 18 off the bench.
Olivet will travel to play Grace Bible College tomorrow, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
