Men’s Basketball Team Defeats Tri-State (Ind.) University, 100-79, in its Home-Opener
The Olivet College men's basketball team defeated Tri-State (Ind.) University, 100-79, in its home-opener tonight at the Upton Center. With the win, the Comets improve their record to 2-1 overall while Tri-State's record falls to 2-3 overall.
OLIVET, MI. -- The Olivet College men's basketball team defeated Tri-State (Ind.) University, 100-79, in its home-opener tonight at the Upton Center. With the win, the Comets improve their record to 2-1 overall while Tri-State's record falls to 2-3 overall.
In the win, the Comets made 23-of-31 (74.2%) of their shots in the second half. In the game, Olivet connected on 36-of-59 shots.
After the Thunder scored the first two points of the game, Olivet answered with a three-point basket by junior guard Matt Brawley (Niles High School) and never trailed again in the game. The Comets then stretched its lead to as many as 12 points at the 8:51 mark when Brawley made two free throws. Tri-State battled back and tied the score at 39 with 1:29 left, but the Comets scored the last four points of the half to take a 43-39 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Olivet built its lead to 21 points on two separate occasions with the last time being the final score when senior forward Terrance Stewart (Muskegon Heights High School) made a three-pointer with 23 seconds left.
"I am really happy with the way that we played tonight," said sixth-year Head Coach Steve Hettinga '93. "This was a team win because all 13 guys played hard. (Mike) Dyson was able to make big plays after Tri-State made a run. Pat (Dermeyer) was also vital in this win."
Senior forward Michael Dyson (Kalamazoo/ Loy Norrix High School) led the Comets with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Brawley added 20 points, senior forward Patrick Dermeyer (Chase Reed City High School) had 16 points and freshman back-up guard Steve Johnson (Detroit/ Murray Wright High School) chipped in with 10 points. Junior guard Travis Schellhammer (Grand Ledge High School) grabbed a team-high six rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Brandon O'Leary paced Tri-State with 18 points. Micah Husband grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Olivet will resume play this Friday-Saturday, Nov. 29-30 when they travel to Meadville, Pa. to participate in the Allegheny College Thanksgiving Tournament. On Friday, the Comets will play Mount Union (Ohio) College at 6 p.m.
