UOlivet tripped up by Alma, 53-21

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet football team was defeated by Alma College, 53-21, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After stopping the Comets on the first drive of the game, the Scots quickly scored a touchdown when Carter St. John threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Brock Miller.
- Olivet answered with a touchdown on its ensuing drive. Freshman Jaylan Johnson capped an 8-play, 65-yard drive with a 1-yard run into the endzone. The PAT kick by freshman Angel Potter tied the score, 7-7, with 5:53 left in the first quarter.
- A 56-yard kickoff return set-up the Scots at the Comet 37-yard line. A rush on first down resulted in no yards before a 37-yard touchdown pass from St. John to Zach Poff on second down made the score 14-7.
- Olivet punted the ball back to Alma on its next possession. On a second down from the 4-yard line, St. John passed to Eddie Williams for touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Scots led 20-7 with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
- Alma increased its lead to 27-7 in the second quarter on St. John's fourth touchdown pass of the game, this one was from 10 yards out to Miles Haggart.
- Olivet closed the gap to 13 points when freshman Carter Leatherwood caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from senior Charlie Grant.
- The Scots added two more touchdowns – 39-yard pass from St. John to Miller and 44-yard run by Williams – in the second period for a 39-14 halftime lead.
- Alma scored two rushing touchdowns – three yards by Brian Morgan and 16 yards by Tyler Herzong – on its first two drives of the second half to go up 53-14.
- The Comets ended the scoring when sophomore Aaren McCray returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet finished the game with 323 yards of offense – 207 passing and 116 rushing.
- Johnson had 19 carries for 65 yards.
- Grant threw for 197 yards on 19-of-32 passing.
- Freshman Wade Brashears caught five passes for 82 yards.
- Freshman Javon Peterson led the defense with 10 total tackles.
- Sophomore Dontrell Thomas had nine tackles, including seven solo stops.
