UOlivet loses at Rochester, 38-17, in season-opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Olivet football team fell to University of Rochester (N.Y.), 38-17, today at Edwin Fauver Stadium for in its season-opener and Comet head coaching debut for Erik Ieuter.
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Yellow Jackets returned a fumble on a botched fourth-down snap 27 yards for the game's first touchdown. Rochester added another first-quarter touchdown following an Olivet interception. After forcing the Comets to punt, the Yellow Jackets put together a 13-play scoring drive to take a 21-0 lead with 13:32 left until halftime.
- Olivet got on the scoreboard at the 1:52 mark of the second quarter when freshman Angel Potter made a 29-yard field goal. Rochester scored another touchdown right before halftime to make the score 28-3 at the intermission.
- Sophomore Aaren McCray intercepted a pass on the Yellow Jackets' first drive of the second half. Freshman Mason Shroad hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Daniel Avila to close the gap to 28-10. The Comet defense forced Rochester to punt. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Avilia threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to freshman Wade Brashears to cap an 18-play, 90-yard drive.
- Rochester capped the scoring with a field goal and touchdown later in the fourth quarter.
FOR THE COMETS
- For the game, Olivet totaled 356 yards of offense compared to 333 for the Yellow Jackets. The Comets had 320 passing yards and only 36 rushing yards, while Rochester had 73 passing yards and 260 rushing yards.
- Avila completed 32-of-44 passes for 320 yards. He also had nine carries for 27 yards.
- Junior Rashawn Mersier caught eight passes for 147 yards.
- Defensively, sophomore Christian McMillan recorded a team-best eight tackles (five solo).
- Junior Montreal Reid tallied seven tackles.
UP NEXT
- The Comets have three straight home games at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The first is next Saturday, September 13, when they play Madonna University at 1 p.m.
