UOlivet’s Carney receives national honors
OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet senior pitcher Bryan Carney has received two national honors for his pitching performance against Albion College on April 19. He was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division III Pitcher of the Week and is one of four starting pitchers selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.
Carney etched his name into the UOlivet record book, striking out a single game record 18 batters. In the game, he also broke the single-season and career strikeout records. Carney enters tomorrow's start at Adrian College with 103 strikeouts this season and 269 in his career.
In the game against Albion, Carney gave up two hits and three walks over eight innings on the mound. Nine of his 18 strikeouts were called third strikes. Carney is only one of three NCAA pitchers this season to record 18 strikeouts in game.
For the entire season, Carney's 103 strikeouts lead all NCAA Division III pitchers and is third among all NCAA pitchers. Also, among only NCAA DIII pitchers, he ranks second in strikeouts per nine innings (15.20), third in WHIP (0.80), fifth in earned run average (1.18) and sixth in hits allowed per nine innings (4.87). Carney leads the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in all these categories.
The game on Friday at Nicolay Field in Adrian starts at 4 p.m.
