Baseball team falls to Davenport, 8-0
The baseball team fell to Davenport University, 8-0, in a non-conference, nine-inning game today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to Davenport University, 8-0, in a non-conference, nine-inning game today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Davenport scored the only run it would need in the first inning. After a leadoff single, the runner went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a ground. The Panthers added to their lead with four runs in the fourth and single tallies in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Meanwhile, Davenport pitcher Cory Hammond scattered six Olivet hits in the complete game, pitching performance. Freshman Jonny Zawacki (Alpena) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Seniors Beau Felix (Hartland) and Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth), junior Tyler Olinske (Negaunee) and freshman Chase Carter (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Catholic) each had a base hit. Carter reached base safely in his 3-of-4 plate appearances, as he was hit by a pitch in the other two.
On the mound, sophomore Nick McCleary (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) threw the first three and two-third innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Freshman Jake Ball (Cadillac) pitched the next two and one-third innings and gave up an unearned run on three hits. Junior Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly), freshman Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale) and freshman Chris Watkins (Grand Junction/Bangor) each tossed an inning of relief.
Olivet will now turn its attention back to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. The Comets will play a four-game series with Albion, beginning Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader in Olivet. The series then moves over to Albion's Frank Joranko Field for two games on Saturday. Thursday's start time is 2 p.m., while Saturday's action starts at 1 p.m.
