ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team was shutout, 6-0 and 5-0, in both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader against Adrian College this afternoon at Nicolay Field in Adrian. The teams will complete the four-game league series tomorrow with a doubleheader in Olivet, starting at 1 p.m.
In the first game, the Bulldogs scored the only run they would need in the first inning. They added another run in the second and two more in third and fifth innings. Olivet's best chances to score were the third and sixth innings when it had runners on first and third base.
Overall, the Comets were held without a hit until for the first five and two-third innings. Senior Phil Sullens (Belleville) broke up Ryan Domschot's no-hit bid with an infield single. Freshman Chase Carter (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Catholic) had the other hit in the seventh. On the mound, sophomore Jay Magro (Bridgman) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered all six runs on 10 hits in five innings, while striking out five. Freshman Jake Ball (Cadillac) threw a scoreless inning of relief.
In the second game, the Bulldogs pushed across a run in the second inning. Adrian padded its lead with four runs, including three unearned ones, in the fifth. Like the opener, the Comets' best opportunity to score was in the third and sixth innings when they left a runner stranded on third base.
Olivet was limited to three hits. Senior Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth) hit a double, while senior Beau Felix (Hartland) and sophomore Justin Pitt (Imlay City) each had a single. Junior Sean Alexander (Fenton) was the tough luck loser, giving up just one earned run on five hits.
Following tomorrow's game, the Comets will take a break from MIAA play and host Davenport University next Tuesday, April 12, for a single, nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
