Baseball team loses to Monmouth, 6-5, in season-opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to Monmouth (Ill.) College, 6-5, this afternoon in its 2011 season-opener at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead with a home run in the first inning and then sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Olivet got three runs back in the seventh inning and made it a one-run game with two runs in the eighth. The big hit in the seventh was a two-run single by junior Tyler Olinske (Negaunee).
Offensively, the Comets finished the game with 11 hits. Senior leadoff hitter Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) reached base safely in all five trips to the plate, including four times with a single. Senior Jimmy Keenan (Charlotte) had two hits and scored two runs.
On the mound, sophomore Jay Magro (Bridgman) was tagged for the loss after throwing the first five and one-third innings. He allowed five earned runs off hits, and struck out six. Junior Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly) pitched two scoreless and hitless innings of relief.
Olivet will play Heidelberg (Ohio) University, ranked No. 1 in the nation according to D3baseball.com and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
