Baseball loses MIAA series opener to Albion, 13-1

The Olivet College baseball team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 13-1, this afternoon in the first game of a weekend series. The teams conclude the series with two seven-inning games tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Albion (21-14, 10-3 MIAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Fighting Comets scored their only run in third when freshman Bo Ford (Warren/Redford Mott High School) hit a double to score junior Brian Grappin (Flushing High School).
Olivet (16-17, 8-5 MIAA) was limited to six hits, including a double each by Ford, Grappin and junior Chris Stambek (Decatur High School). Seniors Beau Locker (Coldwater/Union City High School) and Ricky Strain (Livonia Churchill High School) and freshman Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) had singles for the Comets.
On the mound, senior D.J. Celetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre Dame) picked-up the loss. He pitched an inning and two-thirds, allowing nine hits and six runs (four earned). In relief, freshman Brad Dragicevich (Kalamazoo Central High School) tossed four innings and freshman Brian Schaeffer (Mason High School) pitched one and one-third innings.
Following Saturday's doubleheader, Olivet will wrap-up the 2004 regular season next Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, with a MIAA series at Hope College.
