Baseball Team Beats Kalamazoo, 10-5
The Olivet College baseball team defeated Kalamazoo College, 10-5, today in the opening game of three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series. The Comets and Hornets will face each other in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. With the victory, Olivet has won nine straight games.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Olivet College baseball team defeated Kalamazoo College, 10-5, today in the opening game of three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series. The Comets and Hornets will face each other in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. With the victory, Olivet has won nine straight games.
The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning. The Comets then scored two runs in each of the middle innings (fourth-sixth) before putting the game out of reach with a single run in the seventh inning and three more in the ninth.
Sophomore right fielder Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) was two-for-two with two singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly. He also scored two runs and drove in two. Senior James Virden (Branch/Mason County Central High School) had a two-run single. Juniors Beau Locker (Coldwater Union City High School) and Richard Strain (Livonia/ Churchill High School) scored two runs and had a RBI a piece.
"We received contributions from everyone," said Head Coach Carlton Hardy. "There was no big play that stands out, it was just simply a team effort."
Junior Josh Kellogg (Morley Stanwood High School) started the game and pitched eight and two-thirds innings, allowing 10 base hits, five earned runs and three walks. He struck out nine batters. Junior D.J. Celetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Notre Dame) retired the last batter.
Following its doubleheader tomorrow, the Comets will play at non-league foe St. Mary's College on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
