The University of Olivet to Discontinue Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving
After multi-year evaluation, University prioritizes sustainable athletic offerings and student-athlete experience
Olivet, Michigan — The University of Olivet has announced that it is discontinuing its men's and women's swimming and diving programs following a comprehensive, multi-year review of program sustainability and participation.
The decision reflects ongoing challenges related to roster sizes and aging facility limitations that have impacted the program's ability to operate at a level consistent with the University's expectations for the student-athlete experience.
"Olivet is committed to providing strong, sustainable athletic programs that serve our student-athletes well. After careful evaluation, it became clear that continuing to sponsor swimming and diving would not allow us to meet those standards moving forward," said Ryan Shockey, vice president and chief operating officer. "We are grateful for the commitment of our student-athletes and coaches, and this decision does not diminish the impact they have had on our program and campus community."
The team includes seven student-athletes this academic year. The University will work directly with these student-athletes to provide support during the transition, including assistance for those who wish to continue their athletic careers elsewhere.
The University of Olivet recognizes the student-athletes, coaches, alumni and families who have shaped the swimming and diving programs over the years. Their contributions remain an enduring part of the University's athletic history.
