Comets of the Week - September 16, 2024
The Co-Female Comet of the Week is freshman women’s tennis player Amelia Girard, of Gregory, and graduate of Pinckney High School. Last week, Girard posted a 3-1 combined singles and doubles record in helping Olivet win two matches. In a 7-0 win at Manchester (Ind.) University, she and partner Rylee Lewis won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and at No. 2 singles, Girard won 6-2, 6-2. In a 4-3 victory at home over Franklin (Ind.) College, she had a match-clinching three-set win at No. 2 singles. After losing the first set, Girard won the second set to force a match tiebreaker, which she won 10-3.
The Male Comet of the Week is freshman football player Tronice Hammond, of Dearborn Heights, and graduate of Crestwood High School. Hammond scored three touchdowns to lead Olivet to a 27-23 win over College of Wooster. For the game, he had 11 carries for 72 yards. Hammond’s touchdowns came in the second quarter and covered 19, 18 and three yards.
The Co-Female Comet of the Week is senior women’s volleyball player Abi Nunez, of Hillsdale, and graduate of North Adams-Jerome High School. Last week, Nunez helped Olivet post a 4-0 record, including three wins at the Bluffton Sommer Center Spiketacular. In addition, all four wins were three-set sweeps. Nunez totaled 68 kills (5.67 per set), while hitting at a .273 clip. She also recorded four aces and 44 digs (3.67 per set).
