Dean Trailways Comets of the Week - February 5, 2024

The Dean Trailways Female Comet of the Week is freshman Christina Malackanich, of Hersey, and graduate of Reed City High School. Malackanich helped the women’s basketball team split two MIAA games last week. She scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds in a 62-44 win at Adrian College, and followed that with 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks in a 65-48 loss against Albion College. For the week, she made 8-of-14 baskets (57.1 percent) and 3-of-5 free throws (60.0 percent).

The Dean Trailways Male Comet of the Week is freshman Conner Schipper, of Holland, and graduate of Zeeland East High School. Schipper averaged 16.0 points, 22.5 rebounds and 7.5 blocks in aiding the men’s basketball team to a 1-1 record last week. He started the week by posting what is believed to be the first triple-double in Olivet men’s basketball history with 11 points, 25 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 74-69 overtime loss to Adrian. Schipper ended the week by recording a double-double (21 points and 16 rebounds) to go along with five blocks, five assists and three steals in a 64-56 win over Albion. For the two games, he recorded a 61.9 field goal percentage (13-of-21) and 62.5 free throw percentage (5-of-8). Five of Schipper’s 41 total rebounds were offensive boards, and he committed only five turnovers in 80 minutes of playing time.
