Dean Trailways Comets of the Week - January 23, 2023
The Dean Trailways Female Comet of the Week is senior Gabby Jolliff, of Fowlerville, and graduate of Fowlerville High School. At the Central Michigan University, Jack Skoog Open, Jolliff was second and posted a personal-best indoor mark of 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches) in the pole vault. The performance tops the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association student-athletes this winter.
Other notable female performers last week were Brooklyn Butler (bowling), Lily Connelly (basketball), Jennifer Mann (swimming) and women’s distance medley relay (Sarah Grove, Abbey Peters, Allyson Stevens and Tonya Tepin).
The Dean Trailways Male Comet of the Week is sophomore Lorris Upshaw, of Detroit, and graduate of Cass Tech High School. Upshaw averaged 20 points in leading the men’s basketball team to a pair of road wins last week. On Wednesday night against Albion College, he scored 23 points and grabbed two rebounds. On Saturday afternoon against Kalamazoo College, Upshaw had 17 points and four rebounds. For the week, he posted a 56.5 field goal percentage (13-of-23) and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. In addition, Upshaw totaled six rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals.
Other notable male performers last week were Jordon Brown (track and field), Byron Pearce (track and field) and Hiram Robinson (wrestling).
