OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was swept by Saint Mary's (Ind.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Belles won by scores of 16-1 and 4-2.
In the opener, Olivet took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Sophomore centerfielder Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base when senior catcher Christine Daub (Hudson). Junior second baseman Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) then lined a hit into centerfield to score Hurosky. From there, Saint Mary's scored 16 unanswered runs with two in the second, eight in the third and six in the fifth to cause the game to end early because of the eight-run mercy rule.
The Comets were limited to five hits. Sophomore first baseman Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) went 2-for-3, while Daub was 1-for-1. In the circle, freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) started and went three innings. She gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits. Freshman Nicole McCoy (Detroit/Mumford) relieved her and allowed six runs (one earned) in two innings.
In the nightcap, the Belles plated two unearned runs in the bottom half of the second. Olivet cut its deficit in half in the fourth inning with a run. Daub led off the inning with a single, moved up one base on a successful sacrifice bunt from junior outfielder Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett), advanced to third on a single from Packer and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine).
Saint Mary's extended its lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in its half of the fourth. The Comets scored one run and left the tying runs in scoring position in the seventh inning.
For the game, Olivet out-hit the Belles, 8-6. Lenard had two more hits, and six other players each recorded one hit. The only extra base hit was a double by Santos. Coshow and Hurosky had one RBI apiece. Senior pitcher Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) suffered the loss. She scattered the six hits over the seven innings, giving up just earned runs.
Olivet is scheduled to host Finlandia University for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon, starting at noon.
