OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College Athletic Director Ryan Shockey has announced that Matthew Gay is the head coach for the outdoor recreation and clay target program.
"We are excited about our new program addition with clay target sports at Olivet College and thrilled to be able to announce the hiring of Matthew Gay," said Shockey. "Coach Gay is very well known in the shooting community and is a great addition to our staff. It will be exciting to watch this program develop and thrive under his leadership."
Gay has served as the head shotgun coach for the Michigan State University (MSU) shooting sports team since April 2017. While there, he led the Spartans to the skeet and sporting clays championship at the 2018 SCTP American Team Nationals and the skeet championship at the 2019 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) American Team Nationals. In addition, MSU was the Division III skeet and sporting clays champion, and placed third overall at the 2018 SCTP Collegiate Nationals. In addition, the team won state titles in skeet and sporting clays.
Prior to his time at MSU, Gay was the founder, president and head coach of the Upper Peninsula Youth Shotgun sports organization and Chain of Lakes Youth Sports Organization. He is an NRA credentialed shotgun coach and instructor. Gay serves as a state advisor for SCTP Michigan and vice president of the board of directors for the Michigan Scholastic Clay Target program. He is also a registered National Sporting Clays Association competitor, and is the owner of Sport Shooting Specialties LLC and founder and instructor for Tri-Sect Shooting School. Gay has been a regular contributor and writer for Clayshooting USA and Trapshooting USA magazines.
"It is with great humility and excitement I accepted this position at Olivet College," said Gay. "I have worked for many years to further both my own expertise as a competitor and a coach, as well as youth shooting participation as a whole serving with multiple organizations.
"This program provides a new dimension of opportunity for current and prospective students at Olivet. Our team goal is to recruit, train and field a group of student-athletes who will compete on both the state and national Stage. We will strive to emulate the values of Olivet College. Honor to the game will be our creed and integrity both on and off the field will be our mission."
