HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College women's swimming team kicked off its 2011-12 season today by participating in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Relays, hosted by Hope College at the Holland Aquatic Center. Each year, the season starts with the MIAA Relays at the same pool, where the MIAA Championships will be held at the end of the season.
The top finishing relay for the Comets was the 200 freestyle quartet of senior Caitlin Lohr (Holland/Hamilton), freshman Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview), junior Jana Blodgett (Sturgis) and sophomore Alivia Hammond (Byron Center). They finished in second-place with a time of 1:42.89. Lohr led off the relay with 24.48 second split, which was the fastest one in the race.
The 200 medley relay team of sophomore Jacalyn Cordero (Holland), Blodgett, Lohr and Johnson placed third among the "A" relays with a time of 1:57.76. Lohr posted the fastest butterfly split at 26.29 seconds. The 3x500 freestyle trio of junior Chelsea Mullins (Macomb/L'Anse Creuse North), freshman Shana Bush (Alma) and senior Jessica Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was fourth in 17:10.24.
Olivet is back in action Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, when it hosts Albion, Hope and Carthage (Wis.) for a quad meet at the Battle Creek Lakeview High School Pool. Action starts Friday night at 6 p.m., and continues Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
