Guarnaccia's seven points lead women’s lacrosse to 12-9 win over Saint Mary’s
OLIVET, Mich. – Behind six goals and one assist from junior Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett), the Olivet College women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, 12-9, this evening at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the win, the Comets have a 3-10 overall record, with the three wins being the most in a season in the four-year history of the women's lacrosse program.
Guarnaccia got Olivet on the scoreboard only 55 seconds into the game on a free-position shot. She added another goal at the 24:28 mark. The Belles came back with two straight goals to tie the game at 2-2. Three different Comets, Guarnaccia and juniors Mackenzie Inman (Union City) and Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview), netted goals to make the score 5-2.
Saint Mary's scored twice to cut its deficit down to one, 5-4. Olivet ended the first half on a 4-0 run for a 9-4 halftime lead. The Belles out-scored the Comets, 5-3, in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the five-goal margin at the break.
In addition to her seven points, Guarnaccia finished the game with 11 shots, placing 10 on-goal, and won seven draw controls. Merrell had four goals and seven shots. Inman had a goal and an assist for two points, while taking a team-leading 12 shots. Junior Brittany Hayes (Battle Creek/Lakeview) also scored one goal, while junior Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) recorded an assist. Freshman Xavier Vance (West Bloomfield) collected eight saves between the pipes.
The Comets travel to play Alma College Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
NOTES: With her seven draw controls, Guarnaccia has 41 in 2014 to break the single-season school record. Cortney Wernette held the previous record with 37 in 2012. Guarnaccia and Inman each have scored 32 goals this season, which is the second-most in school history for a single-season. Guarnaccia also four assists for 36 points, which is also the second-most for a single-season. The records are 38 goals and 45 points by Merrell during the 2012 season.
