Women's lacrosse team opens season with 16-2 loss at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – Freshman Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) scored her first two collegiate goals but the Olivet College women's lacrosse team fell to Ohio Wesleyan University, 16-2, this afternoon in its season-opener at Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio.

The Battling Bishops scored the first nine goals of the game before Merrell got Olivet on the scoreboard on an unassisted tally with 10:38 left in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan tacked on three more goals to take a 12-1 lead at halftime. The Bishops added their lead with four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Comets capped the scoring when Merrell second her second goal with 3:28 remaining in the game.

Olivet finished the game with eight shots, including five for Merrell. Freshman Sarah Shaw (Grand Haven) made her collegiate debut in goal. She played all 60 minutes and made 13 saves, while facing 29 shots.

"I was pleased with our performance today," said Olivet Head Coach David Tanis. "We knew going into the game that Ohio Wesleyan was going to be one of our tougher opponents this season. Overall, I am happy with how we played. It was also nice to see Geri score a couple goals for us."

The Comets return to the field next Wednesday, March 7, when they host Alma College in their home-opener. Game time at the Cutler Athletic Complex is 6 p.m.
