Swimming teams sit in seventh and eighth-place at Calvin Winter Invitational
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming teams sit in seventh- and eighth-place after the second day of the Calvin College Winter Invitational at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Today’s events included finals in two relays and six individual events for both genders.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming teams sit in seventh- and eighth-place after the second day of the Calvin College Winter Invitational at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Today's events included finals in two relays and six individual events for both genders. The invitational features a mix of NCAA Division I, II and III schools.
Sophomore Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/San Vicente de Paul) posted the Comets' best finish, as he placed eighth in the 200 butterfly. After posting a season-best time of 1:56.26 in the preliminaries, he slowed to 2:04.55 in the finals. Aoun also finished in 16th-place in the 400 individual medley. He swam the prelims in 4:20.79 and 4:45.78 in the finals.
Also swimming in the "B" finals were junior Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns), junior Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) and senior Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett). Ben Aldrich won the "B" final in the 50 freestyle, with a season-best time of 21.55 seconds.
After recording a lifetime best time of 1:00.60 in the preliminaries, Nick Aldrich completed the finals of the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.17 to finish in 12th-place. Edgar was 16th in the 100 backstroke following a time of :54.61 in the finals and :54.42 in the morning prelims.
The 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Eric Dawdy (Holt), Edgar, sophomore Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton) and Ben Aldrich stopped the clock at 1:28.77 to finish in ninth-place. Edgar, freshman Taylor Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), Aoun and Ben Aldrich finished in 11th-place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:37.69.
The women's team top performance was turned in by junior Kristin Long (Pemberville, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), who finished ninth in the 400 individual medley. After clocking-in at 4:53.82 in the prelims, she dropped three and a half more seconds in the finals at 4:49.32.
Sophomore Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) placed 12th in the 50 freestyle at 25.12 seconds. She completed the prelims in 24:96 seconds. Junior Alivia Hammond (Byron Center) posted a season-best time in the prelims of the 100 backstroke at 1:02.69.
The Comets scored 15th-place points in both relays. The 400 medley relay quartet of Hammond, sophomore Kaitlin Smith (Port Huron), freshman Kira Gates (Grosse Ile) and Johnson finished in 4:15.75. Smith, senior Jana Blodgett (Sturgis), Gates and Johnson touched the wall in 1:43.53 in the 200 freestyle relay.
The third and final day of the invitational is tomorrow with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and finals at 6 p.m.
