Men’s soccer team beats Adrian, 1-0, for school record 13th win
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team defeated Adrian College, 1-0, in its final regular season Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match today at the Cutler Athletic Complex. With the win, the Comets improve their overall record to 13-6-1 and MIAA record to 9-5. The 13 wins break the single-season school record.
Olivet got on the scoreboard just 12 minutes and 32 seconds into the game. Off a short, freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) tapped the ball to freshman Jared Wilson (Lansing/Waverly), who then served the ball into the box. The ball was then re-directed into the goal at the near post by freshman Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta).
The Bulldogs had several chances to tie the game, while the Comets had several opportunities to score another goal. In the closing minutes of the game, Puente had the best chance when he beat a defender in a breakaway, and his shot clanged off the post.
Olivet outshot Adrian, 19-10, including a 10-4 edge in shots-on-goal. Russell led the way with five shots, followed by sophomores Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) and Fred Smyser (Caledonia/East Kentwood) with four and three, respectively. In goal, freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) protected his seventh clean sheet of the season with four saves.
As the No. 4 seed, the Comets now advance to play to No. 1 seed Calvin College in the semifinals of the 2011 MIAA Tournament Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. The other semifinal will be No. 3 seed Trine (Ind.) University at No. 2 seed Hope College. The two winners will play in the tournament championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
