FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team ended its spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic with an 11-9 loss to Lawrence (Wis.) University today at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
Lawrence took an early 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three more runs in the second. The Comets grabbed a 7-4 lead with a six-run fourth inning and another run in the fifth. The Vikings made the score 7-6 when they pushed across two runs in the sixth. Olivet pushed its lead back to three runs, 9-6, with single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings. Lawrence sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom half of the eighth. The tying run came up to bat in the ninth for the Comets, but they failed to score.
Olivet finished the game with 13 hits, including three for freshman David Hernandez (Lansing/Eastern). Freshman Conner Magro (Bridgman) and sophomore Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale) each had two hits. Eight different players recorded at least one RBI. Freshman Peter Panos (Davison) was the only one with two.
On the mound, sophomore Jake Ball (Cadillac) started and went five and one-third innings. He gave up six runs on 12 hits, but did not factor in the decision. Hernandez pitched an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits. Junior Andrew Brawley (Niles) suffered the loss, as he yielded the final three runs on one hit.
The Comets will fly back tonight and begin preparations for their first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) four-game series this Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25. Saturday's first two games will be played at Alma's Klenk Park, while Sunday's games will be played at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
