Baseball team defeated by Elms, 18-6
The Olivet College baseball team fell to Elms (Mass.) College, 18-6, today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to Elms (Mass.) College, 18-6, today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Blazers jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a run in the second and three runs in the third and fourth innings. The Comets dented the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom half of the fourth when freshmen Tom Kort (New Hudson/South Lyon) and Joey Myers (Holt) hit back-to-back RBI-singles.
After Elms scored one run in the top half of the fifth to make the score 8-2, Olivet pushed across two runs in the home half of the inning. Like the previous inning, but juniors Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) and Andrew Brawley (Niles) had consecutive run-scoring singles.
The Blazers put the game out of reach after scoring two runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 17-4. The Comets scored twice in the seventh but could not get any closer, and Elms closed its scoring with a run in the eighth.
Olivet posted 10 hits in the game, with Brawley going 3-for-3 at the dish. Seven others each had one hit. Junior Jay Magro (Bridgman) was the losing pitcher, throwing the first five innings and allowing eight runs (two earned). He struck out six batters and did not walk a walk. Fourth relief pitchers combined to allow six earned runs on 10 hits.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Otterbein (Ohio) University.
