Athletics Summary for Saturday, Sept. 8
Here is a summary of the results for the Olivet College athletic teams on Saturday, Sept. 8. Complete stories for all of the events will be posted at a later time.
The Olivet men’s soccer team defeated Case Western Reserve (Ohio) University, 3-2, in double overtime in its home-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. In the win, junior Fred Smyser recorded a hat trick for the Comets. After a scoreless first half, Case went up to 2-0 with a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes and 3 seconds of the second half. Olivet tied the game with two goals in a span of just over seven minutes. Sophomore Esteban Russell assisted on both goals.
In the first extra frame, a Case player was called for a red card, forcing the Spartans to play a man down. Olivet finally capitalized in the second overtime period. With 2:30 left, a foul was called in the box and Smyser made a penalty kick goal for the win. Click here for the game statistics.
Junior Adrienne Plourde earned medalist honors to lead the Olivet women’s golf team to a second-place finish at the Olivet College Fall Invitational Sept. 7-8 at The Medalist Golf Club. Plourde shot a two-round total of 150 strokes, including a one-over par 73 in Friday’s first round. As a team, Olivet totaled 661 strokes, which was 16 behind team champion Bethel (Ind.) College. The Olivet men’s golf team tied for fourth-place at the first of eight Michigan Intercollegiate Association jamborees this fall. Olivet carded a 309 team score to tie Calvin. Hope and Trine shared first-place honors at 302, followed by Adrian in third at 306. Senior Justin Ardelean and junior Nick Julian placed in a tie for 10th in the player standings with 75s. The football team suffered a 38-14 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran College at Raabe Stadium in Milwaukee. After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors struck first with a 22-yard field goal to go up 3-0. Olivet answered only 40 seconds later when senior Tony Phillips threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to freshman Dominik Givens. Just as quick, WLC’s Donavin Tucker returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a score.
The Warriors added another touchdown to go up 17-7 at halftime. They added to their lead with a touchdown in the third and two more in the fourth. The Comets closed the scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman Chance Nightingale. Senior Blake Iobe made both Olivet PAT kicks. Click here for the game statistics.
The Olivet women’s soccer team fell to Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) in the second day of the John Carroll University Classic at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio. RIT scored three goals in three minutes and 42 seconds in the first half, and never looked back. Sophomore Olivia Gardner and freshman Megan Peplinski each had two shots on-goal for the Comets. Peplinski along with junior Lindsey Winters were named to the all-tournament team. Click here for the game statistics.
The Olivet volleyball team lost in three games (25-8, 25-14, 25-15) to defending MIAA champion Calvin College at the Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids. Emma Brann, Lydia Drikakis, Marissa Guile and Tina Westendorp each recorded four kills in the loss. Click here for the match statistics.
The Olivet cross country teams ran this morning at the Calvin Knight Invite. Sophomore Andrew Benkovsky paced the Olivet men, as he finished the 8K race in 27:38. The women were led by sophomore Lane Duckworth, as she completed her 5K run in 22:55. Click here for the men’s results and women’s results.
