Women's golf team
The Olivet College women's golf team captured the MIAA's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA DIII National Championships in dominating fashion.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women’s golf team has been selected as the Comet of the Week for April 22-28.
The women’s golf team won back-to-back rounds of the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) playoff Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 at The Medalist Golf Club. With the performance, the Comets qualified for the 2013 NCAA DIII National Championships.
In Friday’s round, Olivet broke the MIAA course record with a 319 team score. Junior Theresa Damico, of White Lake, was the medalist one of four Comets in top five in the player standings with a four-over par 76. Junior Ashley Stark, of Grass Lake, shot a career-best 78. Junior Adrienne Plourde, of Redford, chipped-in with an 82. Freshmen Brooke Kastamo, of Howell, and Casey Lamp, of Kalamazoo, carded an 83 and 90, respectively.
In Saturday’s round, Olivet posted a 322 team score. Plourde was the medalist with a two-over par 74. Damico was next with an 80, followed by Lamp at 83 and Kastamo at 85.
Over the three league playoff rounds, the Comets totaled 971 strokes to beat runner-up Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College by a whopping 77 strokes. Hope was third with 1,051 strokes and Calvin was fourth at 1,096.
The 2013 NCAA DIII National Championships will be held May 14-17 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. The women will play at the Baytowne Golf Club.
Olivet's sports information office will select a Comet of the Week each week during the 2012-13 academic year. The athlete will be featured on the home page of the athletics Web site at www.olivetcomets.com.
